I have been using various Sony Ericsson mobile phones for a number of years and have been very happy with them all, that was until I wanted to change my phone. My service provider now only stocks the Nokia N95 which would answer all my technical requirements; but the Nokia is missing that special something!

With the N95 being the only Nokia that would even slightly cut it I started my search for alternate options, this included the Sony Ericsson W960i and the Blackberry range. I wanted something that would handle pretty much any technical demand that I threw at it but at the same time was functional and felt slick to use.

The W960i is a slick looking phone with touch screen and symbian OS it answered the brief but the reviews were mixed at best and my own doubts started to creep in; while the Blackberries are just not attractive, I can’t work out whether it’s the overall design or just the ridiculously cramped qwerty keypad but something just wasn’t right.

So there I was, none the wiser and stuck with my old phone that was getting more redundant as the days rolled on, and then it happened! I had noticed the iphone phenomenon happening late last year and avoided it with a gut feeling that Apple may be stepping a little too far out of their comfort zone. I couldn’t have been more wrong, and while this revolution happened around me I finally started to take interest and that was when Apple announced the new 3g iphone, well the timing couldn’t have been better with my contract up and looking for a phone that was a bit special I ordered one.

Phew! My search was over, but had I made the right decision? Well my brand new gadget is arriving on the 11th July so I will be putting the iphone through its paces and I will post in a few days with my views good or bad!

12 months ago I took a leap of faith a moved from the comfort of my job as a designer to the not so familiar role of web designer/developer. This seemed like a nervy but natural progression for my career, well it did at the time!.

Being one of the main designer of a small studio I felt confident in my own abilities, I was able to produce good quality artwork for all forms of print and create this using all the application provided to a good standard (obviously I still had a lot to learn). During this time I had started to take an active interest in all things web, and when the opportunity for a change in direction arrived I grabbed it with both hands.

When I started I quickly realised what a massive learning curve this was going to be, I not only had to get to grips with our internal content management system I had to learn a never ending list of scripts just to get by, and that was what I did for the best part of 8 months. I would work late, take projects home and read more articles on the web than I could possibly imagine, and finally I started to get to grips with a move I thought would be fairly straight forward.

Well, now just over twelve months has passed and I am now able to (I hope) share what I have learned, and over the next few months I will try to help any other budding web designer make the transition over to the mystical web. Visit the ‘my say’ section of my site in the future to find simple but useful help.
